FREE Workshop

On Sunday, December 14, grab your pen and notebook and head to the DRAW Gallery Space for a unique writing workshop led by visiting artists Akeema-Zane, Amani Greene, and Joselia Hughes, participants in Strategies for Liberation, The School of Making Thinking’s December residency in Midtown Kingston.

In this workshop, the artists open a door into their creative processes, inviting you to write alongside them using the same prompts that are shaping their current projects. Over the course of their 11-day residency, Akeema, Amani, and Joselia are each developing an art book rooted in their artistic practices—an undertaking that requires deep immersion in generative writing.

From 2–4 PM on Sunday, December 14, you’ll join them in that generative process: responding to prompts, diving into a focused writing period, sharing your work, and offering and receiving strengths-based feedback. Step into parallel creative rhythms with these visiting artists and experience the evolving energy of their work from the inside.

Strategies for Liberation is an artist residency organized by The School of Making Thinking (SMT) in Kingston, NY, in collaboration with Eureka! Press, a local printing press, and artist Akeema-Zane, with support from Midtown Kingston Arts District. The residency provides a supportive, exploratory environment for Black artists from New York to translate their artistic practice into art-book form. Grounded in the belief that art-making is a method of survival—particularly for marginalized communities—the residency guides artists in translating their practice to the page in ways that reach wider audiences.

And don’t miss the end-of-residency reading on Saturday, December 20 at 6 PM, also at the DRAW Gallery.
